June Meeting! And a Party?

Our May meeting was great! We Cinco de Mayoed at Roots and learned more about the possibility of using that space. We also talked about the difficulties teaching artists have connecting with schools in RI, briefly gave a General Auditions update, and talked about having a RIPE Party! July 27 is the tentative date for that, so put it in your books, friends.

Also we set our next meeting: June 13 at 7pm, location TBD.

April Meeting is in May!

Our March meeting was stupendous with nearly 10 or something people there to talk shop. We met at the fabulous Mathewson St. Church Theater and learned about everything those good folks are doing to begin renting the space to artists again.

Additionally we discussed:

  • The RIPE General Auditions which will now be June 1 at 95 Empire.
  • The podcast, which we encourage everyone to listen to and give feedback on.
  • The need for a social gathering of RIPE. A party, if you will. Perhaps over the summer in Barrington at the RISD Beach or something.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Sunday May 5 at 4pm and will be held upstairs at Roots — which is another of these super hidden black boxes downtown, dying for artists to decide it’s worth digging in and populating them again.

March Meeting!

The February meeting was held at Trinity Rep on Sunday and six of us were there to meet and chat and exchange. A few huge action items were put into motion, namely organizing a general audition for the entire RI community and establishing a “Gigs” page on the website where people can post audition and jobs notices.

The March meeting will be on Friday March 22nd at 6:30pm at the Mathewson St Church at 134 Mathewson St in Providence. Closed due to fire codes years ago, the church has brought the sweet blackbox back to life and is looking for performers of all types who may want to rent the space for their small(ish) events. Join us to talk turkey in a cool space!

February Meeting and the Network of Ensemble Theaters Workshop!

January’s meeting was great and small (and included an agenda item where we discussed if we should keep having meetings. We decided “yes.”)

Our February Meeting will be Sunday February 24 at 4pm at the Aborn St offices at Trinity Rep (46 Aborn St, 3rd floor). It will be following. . . .

The Network of Ensemble Theater’s Financial Literacy workshop, which we are all incredibly lucky to have in Providence. You should definitely come (but space is limited so register soon!) Here’s the description:

Join NETWORK OF ENSEMBLE THEATERS in Providence, RI on February 23 – 25  for a FREE professional development workshop on Financial Literacy for small arts organizations!

Financial Literacy 101
Designed to empower ensembles and small arts organizations, this participatory artist-focused seminar increases attendees’ comfort, confidence, comprehension, and competency levels by sharing the basic tools needed to manage the financial “business” of artmaking. It provides an introductory-level overview of the financial components involved in operating an arts organization, including:

-Planning (chart of accounts, budgeting, cash flow projections);

-Day-to-day fiscal management (receivables, payables, deposits, bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, financial controls and policies);

-Reporting (tools for evaluation and review by staff/company members, boards, and external stakeholders, and how to use these tools internally to guide your decision making).

Led by NET Managing Director Alisha Tonsic, the session is designed for a small group, in order to ensure an intimate, comfortable setting and time for personal attention. Participants receive in-class handouts, as well as a take-home USB drive loaded with templates, forms, and resource materials that they can put to use immediately with their companies. In addition, participants receive a one-on-one private consultation  to access tailored coaching and direct responses to their specific questions and concerns.

Dates:

February 23rd                    10am – 4pm (with a one-hour lunch break)
February 24th & 25th          Optional 45-minute private coaching sessions

Cost:
FREE to Rhode Island arts organizations! Advance registration required, limited to 15 participants.

This workshop is made possible, in part, through a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) and New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) to allow participants to attend for free on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional support for this session and the Ensemble ABCs program is provided by lead funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

January Meeting

Do you like talking to people face to face? Do you have an idea you want to float by a group in the IRL rather than the URL?

Come to our next monthly meeting. This one is Sunday January 27, 2013 at 4pm at the Pawtucket Armory, 172 Exchange St in Pawtucket. Please join us. We mostly just talk about whatever it is the people who come want to talk about. Something neat happens every time.

As always, if you’d like to say something before that meeting or if you can’t make it or if you love chatting about stuff on facebook, you can join the RIPE facebook group.
